Medical Wire for Catheter-based Devices
Medical wire is being designed into more and more catheters because it allows for a conduction of energy. This makes it great for applications such as diagnostic, ablation, ultrasound, hearing aids and much more.
One way to optimize wire in your catheter-based device is by adding multiple layers over the conductor. This enhances the performance characteristics of the wire.
In some cases, it’s critical to have insulative properties but you also need the wire to move freely in the catheter. The ideal way to achieve this is by adding a layer of polyimide over the conductor. Follow this up with a layer of PTFE loaded polyimide for lubricity on the outer layer.
Another example of multilayer construction includes a layer of polyurethane over the conductor. Then add a layer of Pebax. This allows the outer most surface to bond well to the catheter assembly.
These are just two examples of infinite possibilities in layering wire to achieve your desired performance.
