An emerging trend in interventional device design is using spiral-cut hypotubes in place of braided shafts for a thinner, higher-performance device.

A new Cobalt Polymers case study shares an example of this trend. A Tier I OEM customer was replacing a braid-reinforced, multilayer shaft with a next-generation design featuring a laser-cut hypotube that allowed for higher strength, higher torque, and thinner walls.

The challenge? This tiny (2 Fr) catheter needed a thin, flexible, protective polymer cover that would bond to and move with the underlying metal structures. Using a traditional FEP reflow process would have been tough–and costly–due to the metal core and thin walls.

Cobalt Polymers’ Pebax Heat Shrink Tubing turned out to be an ideal solution. Because it bonds to the metal core of the device, it has the flexibility to move with the underlying metal structure. It also remains intact and integrates with the device, eliminating the cumbersome reflow process with traditional FEP heat shrink tubing. This saves time and cost and preserves yield.
